Jean Twnge was the first psychologist to sound the alarm about phone use in children and adolescents. Around 2016, she noticed that mental health indicators had shot upward around 2012, when smartphones had become ubiquitous – and made the connection. Her hunch apparently prompted Jonathan Haidt (who had previously focused on problematic parenting and pedagogical practices) change his mind – and put “The Anxious Generation” out.
